A little back story.
1986. One of the first cassette tapes I buy is the Pretty In Pink soundtrack.
8th grade. My hair is cut in the same style as Claire in The Breakfast Club.
I have a slumber party on my 16th birthday. We watch Sixteen Candles.
I'm hanging out with college roommates. We watch Sixteen Candles.
I'm lounging with my husband. We watch Sixteen Candles.
39 years old. I meet Molly Ringwald.
Despite what you just read, I'm not a Molly stalker. (Unless you count that time when I lived in L.A. and went to the shops in Venice she had recommended in the paper.) Seriously. Just think about it, how many times have you watched a Molly Ringwald movie over the years?
Last Wednesday I went to a reading for her new book, When It Happens To You, in D.C with some friends. We had a ball. The excerpt she read from her book was impressive, but the good stuff was in the Q&A session. She talked about John Hughes (Anthony Michael Hall was the one to inform her of John's death), Hollywood (mentioning Kristen Stewart's scandal and how she couldn't handle the scrutiny today) and writing advice (write what you want to write, not what you think others want to hear). She is very quick on her feet with and has a great sense of humor. Zero pretension. You pretty much want to be the Duckie to her Andi.

Then...we had a chat. Walking up for the book signing, the only thing I thought to talk to her about was that we're both moms to three-year old twins. So I said hello and went for the twin bonding moment. She perked up, "oh yeah?" "Please don't tell me yours are potty trained," I said. Molly scrunched her face "sorry, they are." Then she asked if mine were in school because she thinks it has helped hers, adding that they are getting easier to reason with at this age. She was so open and friendly. She was even asking me questions as I walked away, "Two boys? Boy/girl?" Besties, I tell you.
Would you have geeked out like me?
P.S. I went to the Emmy Awards in 2005 and got my photo taken with Jon Cryer. The Pretty In Pink circle is complete! Cue If You Leave by OMD here.
