I'm helping Studio Calico celebrate Father's Day by kicking off a week-long series about Project Life and Studio Calico Dads. Hello, cute! Be sure to check in on the Studio Calico Facebook and Twitter pages for more this week, with a new giveaway everyday.
That guy up there? He's the true memory keeper in our family. I just make it all look pretty.
My big cheat sheet with Project Life is the daily notes Jim takes. I refer to them every time I go to make a spread, whether it's double checking what day we went to Target or pulling quotes to add to cards. Jim is a writer and a high school creative writing teacher. His desire to write about the girls has been an immense gift. Here's more from him to tell you all about it:
About a week before my twin daughters’ first birthday, I opened a file and started writing a snapshot of their day. I’ve carved out a couple moments each day since to record a memory. Almost three years later, I’ve written an estimated 131,250 words--just a bit longer than Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice--to document highlights, lowlights, and the minutiae of daily life.
And I’m so glad I do, otherwise I would have definitely forgotten these gems:
12/4/10: We made a Target run to get more Christmas tree lights and a movie for Mommy (“Eclipse”). I had Charlotte in my cart at Starbucks while Mommy and Maggie checked out. It was taking a long time to get coffee, so I picked Charlotte up. She was tired (Maggie had woken her up too early from her nap) so she let me give her a snuggle and some kisses. She leaned back for a couple of seconds and then leaned her forehead back against my lips and said “Dada” in a very sweet whisper. My heart completely melted.
5/17/11: Maggie’s new trick: When you are changing her diaper, she’ll grab your arm, say “hug” and then pull it tight to her and say “awwww.”
10/27/11: Maggie took a break from pushing her Crazy Coupe around the driveway and wandered into the grass, laid back, and looked up at the clouds. I told Charlotte to come over and look at the clouds and she laid down next to Maggie and looked up. Then, Maggie said, “Dada see clouds?” and I laid down next to them and we watched the clouds go by for a while.
2/9/12: Maggie was talking to herself in the tub saying, “share...be nice...” and then she patted Charlotte’s shoulder twice and said “Best...Friend...” slowly. Then Maggie leaned over and gave her a hug. Maggie is slowing down a lot of her phrases, like when she was eating dinner and kept getting annoyed that I was reading a magazine. She kept saying, “JimJimJim... What... you... do-ing?”
9/23/12: We watched some football after nap time; every time someone gets tackled, Maggie yells, “He need a crutch!” Charlotte woke up before Maggie and went straight to the Cookie Monster Play-doh toy. When she heard Maggie thumping around in her bedroom, Charlotte started pointing to the ceiling and saying, “Oh no--she coming. The monster coming!”
There are thousands of moments like these--nothing earth-shattering or life-altering--but if I hadn’t written them down, they’d be gone. I originally started writing these snippets as a gift for Maggie and Charlotte, but I soon realized it was really a present for me. Just knowing I had to sit down later and write about their day made me play closer attention to them. As a result, I know and love my daughters that much more.
Simply put, I think I am a better Dad because I take the time to do what poet Mary Oliver recommends: “Instructions for living life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”
I think I've found my new favorite quote. Thanks babe and Happy Father's Day! Studio Calico is now a one-stop shop for monthly Project Life kits and supplies from Becky Higgins, like this page protector insert I used in my album with Jim's notes.
